Ol’ Burger Beats — Demo Tape (2013) in review

Demo Tape is a 5-song EP released back in 2013. The cover art features a blurry picture of presumably Ol’ Burger himself, and the whole colour-way gives the whole project a nice vibe.

In the bottom corner of the cover there is some text with the artist and release name, and the classic Ol’ Burger Beats logo that (sadly) hasn’t been used since.

Our first number on here is a short introduction track called “Expectations”, a nice little loop with the drums mixed relatively quietly – a little detail I am fond of in the song.

Before I go any further I have to say that the mixing and transitions track-to-track are excellent, fading in and out little bits of the sample to get you in the mood for what is coming next.

Secondly, “Ubeskrivelig” (translating from Norwegian – where OBB is from, to “undescribable”) is another smooth jam and contains a Norwegian vocal sample to spice it all up again. It’s the smoothest brass-based loop on the EP, and the snare sound on this track is phat too.

Next up we have “Bridges”, which uses a slightly more well-known sample, and the chops are so so clean on this one! This is the type of beat I could listen to for days and not get tired. The feel is immaculate, and that goes perfectly into our next song “Mellow”.

The whole EP was put onto CDr, and handed out to labels as promos, and when he released his debut album “High Rhodes LP” the following year, he would collaborate with the talented rapper ScienZe (plus bonus scratches from the amazing DJ Chali) and use the beat for “Mellow” in their song to be titled “Immaculate”.

Both tracks “Bridges” and “Mellow / Immaculate” were also featured on his 2015 mini-album “Unreleased Instrumentals”.

Finally, we have the last track “L”. This feel-good track is the perfect way to end the whole experience on a high note and leaves you humming it for the rest of the day. As I mentioned earlier, this was released on CDr and is sold out on his Bandcamp, but he is also selling a copy on his Discogs page, so please do support the artist and you can also purchase the digital version of this release on his Bandcamp too.
