Last issue, we brought you former Black Crowe Rich Robinson’s new band The Magpie Salute’s debut album. Now here’s the third LP in just two years from his brother Chris’s outfit, with the superb guitar of Neal Casal.
More groove-based than the riffy Crowes, this finds CRB in reflective mood. The swaggering opener Behold The Seer is a bit of a red herring, but perhaps the best thing here, with its fluid guitars, funky keyboards and 70s flavour.
Casal’s soloing is tasteful throughout and Adam MacDougall’s piano shines on She Shares My Blanket and Blue Star Woman. Robinson’s knack for a classic-rock ballad hasn’t deserted him – If You Had A Heart To Break ticks all the right boxes. The psych-folk Glow, featuring sarodist Alam Khan, is another standout.
